Every year in late November and December millions of travelers take to the skies. The holiday season brings with it an annual spike in airline travelers headed home to visit family. And with the rise in airborne travelers comes hazards, such as long lines, delays, overcrowded planes, lost luggage, and the possibility for plenty of frustration. The good news is there are things you can do to help make your holiday travel as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

First and foremost, it all starts with the luggage. If at all possible, carrying your luggage with you onto the plane will save you a great deal of time and money. Any seasoned travelpro will tell you that your best bet for beating the crowds and reducing the time spent at check in counters or the opportunity for lost luggage is to carry on. Start by laying out your clothing and toiletries before you pack and giving careful consideration to each and every piece.

Do you really need to bring the ear and nose hair trimmer for a 3 day trip? Is there going to be a place you can do laundry while on your vacation. Minimize the excess items in your suitcase and you just might find you don’t even need that second bag at all.

Also remember choosing the right carry on bag makes a world of difference. There is nothing more embarrassing that digging through your unmentionables trying to locate a pair of headphones crammed in the bottom of a one compartment bag. A good carry on bag has many compartments of which at least two are easily accessible while you are on the plane. You can store clothing and toiletries in the main compartment and stick things like your iPod, magazines, and a snack in the external compartments for easy retrieval.

If you’re looking for a good carry on with plenty of space, there are some great Kipling bags available online for a good price.

It’s also good practice to ship gifts and large bulky items to your destination ahead of time. Most airlines are charging for checked luggage now which means packing along all those Christmas presents could cost you upwards of an additional $ 50 or more on a round trip ticket. It’s crazy to pay those kinds of prices to check bags when you can ship them via a currier service ahead of time for less than a $ 20 spot.

If you find yourself needing to bring along more than one bag, make sure you get a complete and matching luggage set. Luggage sets are easier to identify than a hodgepodge collection of bags, and in the instance one or more of your bags don’t arrive at your final destination it makes the whole process of reporting your missing luggage much easier. “Ah yes sir, I had 3 navy blue American Tourister bags that didn’t get off the plane with me in Nashville” is much easier to repeat than, “Umm there was a black one with wheels, and a grey duffle bag, ooh and a blue backpack with a troll doll thingy hanging from the zipper.”

Not only are matching luggage sets easier for airlines to identify they are easier for you to pick out at luggage claim as well. To make grabbing the right luggage off the carousel even easier, choose luggage sets in uncommon or bold colors and patterns. Just about everyone has a black rolling suitcase and chances are every single one that slides down the luggage claim ramp will be manhandled by at least three different travelers eager to get their bags and get out of the airport. If you bring along a set in bright red you won’t have to play the luggage guessing game with everyone else at baggage claim.

Yes, choosing the right luggage helps eliminate some of the hassle associated with holiday travel. However, if you are traveling home this holiday season the most important thing you can pack with you is the right attitude. Keep calm and don’t get caught up or overwhelmed with the amount of people and chaos at the airport. Print your tickets and boarding passes ahead of time, and when you arrive at the airport take a deep breath, relax and you’ll get on the plane and home for the holidays in no time.

Is anything more luxurious than taking a cruise holiday? Traveling to exotic locations on a luxury ship, catching sunrays, and breathing the salty breezes can renew and replenish anyone, no matter how shopworn from the cares of work. However, a cruise holiday requires planning in order to be the best it can be. Check out these tips to have a cruise experience you will remember.

So where do you start when planning a cruise holiday? First, what is your budget like? Do you need to hold down expenses? Then here are a few tips for economizing on your cruise holiday.

When scheduling your cruise holiday, you should be aware that there are off season and on season dates, and that you want to schedule your trip in the off season to get the best deal. What you may not know, however, is that cruise lines actually change prices a number of times throughout the year. Ask and find out when their absolute lowest season prices are. In addition, keep your plans somewhat flexible so that you can change ships at the last minute. Sometimes a ship is not filled to capacity, so the cruise line will sell the last few tickets at a real bargain. It is always to their advantage to sail filled to capacity because people on holiday spend money on souvenirs, drinks, etc. Use this knowledge to get a really great deal.

Where you cruise to on your holiday can make a big difference in your cost as well. If you pick a popular spot, you can travel cheaper than if you choose a less popular spot. Another consideration is whether you really care about those ports of call. If you just want to stay on the ocean liner and enjoy the luxuries, book a cruise that doesn’t stop anywhere. These “cruises to nowhere” are just as luxurious as the others but cost less.

To be safe on a cruise holiday, don’t take a lot of expensive equipment or jewelry with you. Make sure your passport, health insurance, and other papers are up to date. Be sure to ask about laws you may inadvertently be breaking when you get off the shore you are accustomed to. Laws in ports and even in the water can vary, and you sure don’t want a big hassle with a foreign law enforcement agency.

To travel lighter, find out about equipment that will be available on the ship. For instance, if the cruise line provides irons or hair dryers, you won’t need to pack yours. Also pack your own sample size shampoo, toothpaste, and other toiletries because these items will cost more in the gift shop. You should have access to laundry facilities on your cruise holiday, so you don’t have to take a huge amount of clothing. Pick a wrinkle proof lightweight outfit for every two or three days and pick separates in colors that coordinate so you can get different looks. Be sure to pack a formal and or semi-formal outfit if you will be taking part in these sort of activities on your cruise holiday.

The price of hotel rooms in Europe is constantly on the rise. Staying in a hostel is a good alternative when traveling in Europe. It is a safe, cheap, enjoyable way to travel, not only for young people but also for baby boomers.

One of the things I enjoyed most about hosteling was the camaraderie. I met people of all ages from all over the world doing what I was doing….. traveling and experiencing! Some have already been to where I was heading. Others were heading to where I had been. Everyone had stories to share and must-see places to visit.

When I planned a trip to Europe recently I decided to hostel, even though I’m a baby boomer. The first thing I did was visit the travel agency I normally dealt with in my hometown in Canada. They sell International Hostel Memberships, as do many travel agencies, and have them available all the time. For a cost of under $ 40 I knew I could save at least 5% on each booking I made. When dealing in Euros, the savings soon add up.

Making reservations through www.hostelbookers.com was so easy. I could find out what hostels were available and how close they were to public transportation. In North America, train stations are often located in seedier parts of the cities. In Europe, because train travel is so important for business people, the hostels are generally located in safe neighbourhoods.

Hostels in Europe often requires sharing accommodations. Some hostels have separate dorms for men and women but this isn’t always the case. Some offer private room, or share with only one or two others but the cost is definitely a lot more that way. If the idea of sharing space with a stranger doesn’t appeal to you, you might want to consider the hotel route instead.

Each hostel is run differently, but linen and a locker are usually supplied. There may be an extra charge for these amenities in some hostels. I carried a hand towel and a combination lock with me, just in case I needed it. Toiletries aren’t usually supplied either.

Everyone is expected to take care of making their own bed but some hostels do have maid service for an extra fee. Just remember to tip at the end of your stay.

I found that a lot of the hostels in Europe offered a breakfast, which was included in price. The meal ranged from a pre-packaged roll and coffee to a full breakfast buffet. They usually had a fridge and cooking facilities available for the hostelers too. Most hostels now offer free wireless service instead of having to find an Internet café.

The downside of hosteling can be the noise. If there are a number of young people in the facility, they may be partying until the wee, small hours of the morning. I made sure I had a pair of earplugs with me for such occasions! I always tried to find a hostel that had an 11 PM quiet time and a late check-out time. Most hostels are shut down for 3 or 4 hours during the afternoon while cleaning is done so be prepared to be out sightseeing, even if you had a noisy night.

Hosteling isn’t for everyone but it certainly can add to the adventure and is well worth looking into.

My Mom’s Famous Potato Salad Recipe

This is a back-to-basics recipe. Nothing fancy here. My Mom was asked EVERY TIME to make the potato salad, so she must have been doing something right! Every time I make this for a party or occasion, I get nothing but compliments!

5 Lbs. Red Potatoes

1 Dozen Eggs

1 Small Onion

1 Jar Mayo

Salt & Pepper

Boil the potatoes (whole) until firm-tender (you don’t want them to overcook, or they will get mushy). Remove from pot to a cookie sheet lined with paper towels to cool. Hard boil the eggs*. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel the skin off and dice into around ½ in. cubes. Peel the eggs and chop them up into the same bowl. Chop or process the onion and add to bowl. Add salt & pepper to your personal taste. Dump the entire jar of Mayo in and mix it up with your freshly washed hands. Refrigerate.

*To make perfect hard-boiled eggs every time, place the eggs in the pot. Now add COLD water to cover the eggs. Place on stove and bring to a boil. As soon as the eggs start to boil, set your timer for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, CAREFULLY dump the hot water while running cold water into the pan to replace it. Keep running the cold water into the pan until it STAYS cold. (the heat from the pan and the eggs will warm the water). Now they are ready to peel!

Everyone needs a break; a summer holiday or vacation can do a lot to recharge a college student’s mental batteries. There are many advantages to getting away from it all and a summer vacation is an ideal prescription for mental exhaustion and stress as well as being a great chance of spreading wings and trying new things.

What student would turn down the chance of a summer vacation? Very few!

The catch for many is how do they afford it? The good news for hard-up students is: there are summer vacations they might enjoy without it costing a lot. In fact, often the most cheap-and-cheerful vacations are the ones they will remember with fondness for the rest of their lives.

Here are some fun ideas for summer vacations for college student without the fear of them going broke:

Hiking holidays … Hiking costs nothing! Whether it’s up a mountain, hiking along the coast, in the countryside or at a local park, there are many places with hiking trails that suit the adventurous, the artistic, the spiritual and even those who prefer not to push themselves too hard but who appreciate light outdoor activities!

Volunteer … You could volunteer to help with local events, charities and youth clubs. Some of these will offer cheap summer vacations to their members. Get involved, for instance, with the GirlGuides or Scouts association and volunteer to help out at one of their camp or adventure holidays. Be prepared to put in a little time through the year to help at their weekly meetings and to get to know the kids but the rewards will far outweigh the effort involved.

Camping … Go camping with friends; ideally a friend who already has the equipment! Buying all the gear can be expensive but if you club together with friends and manage to borrow all you need, this can be a fun and relatively cheap holiday. Research camp sites first as again some can be pricey but there are plenty that offer basic amenities that don’t cost a lot.

Youth Hostels … The yha offers cheap accommodation at over two hundred city, coast or countryside locations throughout the UK.

Student Travel Discounts … Before booking a holiday, ask whether there are any discounts for students. Whether travelling by rail, air or sea there are often discounts when showing your student card. Similarly, theatres, museums and hotels may offer discounts for college students. Student Flights for instance offers cheap flight tickets, rail passes, car hire, hotels and hostels.

There is so much benefit from taking a summer vacation so don’t let cost put you off. With a little research you might find your student status can actually save you money and you get to enjoy an unforgettable vacation without this breaking your budget.

Contiki holidays are aimed at 18-35 year olds who want to travel in an organized group to their desired destination.

Contiki travel is perfect for individuals who don’t want to travel alone. The pre-packaged tours take the stress out of planning a vacation, as transport and accommodations are included, but still allow for flexibility in the activities you want to participate in at each destination.

Contiki Tour Styles

Contiki offers camping, concept and timeout tours.

Camping tours are in 2-person tents in selected campgrounds; concept accommodation is a mix of cabins, hostels and hotels; and timeout tours are in hotels only.

Each tour type is priced differently, depending on the nature of the accommodations and each tour group has a maximum number of 50 people. With this many people, you are sure to make some great friends and meet people who want to share similar experiences on their trip.

What is Included in a Contiki Tour?

Accommodation is included for every night of your chosen tour type. If travelling solo, you will be sharing with another travelling companion of the same sex.

Camping and concept tour meals are cooked by your mobile chef or site representative, and timeout tours meals are usually provided at the hotel you are staying at or a special restaurant in the city nearby. Not all meals are included in the price of your tour to allow some flexibility in your day. All breakfasts are included and some dinners, allowing you to choose to have lunch wherever you happen to be exploring!

Transport is by air-conditioned coach with your very own Contiki driver and tour leader to answer your questions and point out important landmarks on your way.

Contiki tours can range from a few days to a few weeks in length. Tour highlights are included in the price of your tour, with optional extras available at most destinations, such as a Gondola ride in Venice or a Cabaret show in Paris. The optional extras have not been included in the tour price to give people flexibility to try other experiences if they desire and to keep costs down for those who can’t afford to do everything. You should budget to include some optional extras in your trip to make the most of your vacation.

Where Does Contiki Travel?

Contiki travels to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America and Asia. Contiki trips are very fast paced with usually only one or two days in each destination city, and long days to see as much as possible of the different cultures.

Contiki holidays are particularly good for getting a basic taste of a country, which allows you to decide if you would go back to spend more time in a particular location in the future.

Holiday Travel Guide to Greece

Seeing Greece online is not the same with having Holiday Travel in Greece. Holiday Travel in Greece I most cases means going back into the time, not for years and decades only, but even millenniums. Sited in the south part of Balkan’s peninsula today Greece is one of most visited and well know tourist destinations in all Holiday Travel Guide books.

Tourist for his Holiday Travel might come into the Greece by land, air and sea. At the north Greece has frontiers with Macedonia, Albania and Bulgaria, from the east side is a Turkey and at south Greece is opened to the Mediterranean by the Aegean sea.

In Holiday Travel Guide books stands that, accessing from the north the first big city is Thessaloniki with almost million habitants. It is big economic, cultural and education center. Holiday Travel Guide worldwide will not recommend north area of the Greece as a travel destination. Big harbors as Thessaloniki, Pieria with big overseas ships make big pollution in this area which is not pretty much attractive. Traveling to south by E75 highway, the landscape begun most attractive. Many monuments from the Hellenic period have pretty much to say about ancient Greece. Ancient Greece was a place full of recreation of sorts. From socializing to the Olympics, the Greeks had numerous ways of keeping themselves busy. Your Holiday Travel Guide will tell you that the ancient Greeks were the originators of recreation. They had many of the same sports and recreation activities that we use today. Every city-state had at least one gym. There you could do a combination of activities such as, run track, visit the lecture hall and park. There was also a bathing facility, where you could go after a workout.

Traveling deep back in the time with your Holiday Travel Guide you will that two major city-states in ancient Greece were Athens and Sparta, and these two cities had different social systems and concentrated on perfecting different aspects of life. The ancient Greeks developed a social system that reflected their geography and climate. The city-state was the name given to the early kingdoms built around a small city, with the largest political unit being the city itself. In time, city-states would join together to form larger political units, creating larger kingdoms and eventually empires stretching across much of a continent or other large area. For the people, the city-state was the basic political unit, and the major ones were Athens and Sparta. The leadership in Athens was democratic, while that in Sparta was based more on strong military leaders. Present day democracy and some funds of today science even come from those old ancient times.

Archimedes, Pythagoras, Diogenes, Homer and many know people from that time had deep contribution for Greece to become top tourist destination in most of the Holiday Travel Guide tours today. Greek’s Islands are different stories one by one. Lot of information’s might be found in Holiday Travel Guide sites online that will describe and picture them exactly as they are. The only one way to fill them is to go there.
